How can couples stay in love forever through Agape Love?

Staying in lover forever requires a commitment to the highest level of love possible which is Agape Love. “To commit to loving a person for five minutes is easy. To commit to loving a person for the rest of your life, after you have met them, is a strong commitment. But when you commit to loving a person before you meet them and for the rest of your life, you have made the strongest commitment one can make to a relationship (Tom Houck).” Couples who desire to stay in love forever must have a lifetime commitment to providing their spouse Agape Love.

According to a recent article, How to Stay in Love, the author, Sheiresa Ngo, proposes that falling in love in love forever encompasses four major principles. The four principles involve emotions and nonverbal communication. Ngo believes that couples can stay in love forever by:

1) Make each other feel special

2) Fight fair

3) Look at each other

4) Embrace forgiveness

Couples who desire to stay in love forever must understand that the highest level of love is Agape Love.

We find one example of Agape Love in John 3:16. According to John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

Many have surmised that Agape Love requires a sacrifice as Jesus sacrificed His life so that we all would have an opportunity to have an everlasting relationship with God. They also believe that only God can provide the Agape type of Love. However, the bible clearly outlines that husbands are to have Agape Love with their wives.

What bible scriptures provide the outline for Agape Love in the marriage?

Colossians 3:19 – Husbands love your wives, and be not bitter against them.

Ephesians 5:25 – Husbands love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

Ephesians 5:28 – So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife Loveth himself. In each verse, the husband is directed to provide their wife Agape Love.

How can a husband provide Agape Love?

First we must begin with the Greek definition of Agape Love. Agape love means to love from a social or moral sense. From a social perspective, Agape Love means to form a cooperative and interdependent relationship with others. From a moral perspective, Agape Love means to conform to standards of right and just behavior. When applied to a marriage, Agape Love means to form cooperative, interdependent, and right behavior with our spouse.

What examples exist in the bible that validate couples sustaining Agape Love?

Aquila and Priscilla are a husband and wife that exhibited characteristics consistent with Agape Love. One of the examples of cooperation involved them working together as tent makers. According to Acts 18:3, “For by trade they were tent-makers.” Every Jewish boy was responsible for learning some type of trade. Aquila’s parents chose to have their son learn how to be a tent maker. Aquila taught his wife the tent making skills and she happily assisted him.

They were interdependent on each other as they taught and witnessed for Jesus Christ. They grew to love God’s Word. They shared the Word together which strengthened their love for each other and their spirit of togetherness. They were diligent students of the Word, and they loved to share it with others. They invested time together in helping people by spiritually caring for them. For example, they helped Apollos to become more keen and astute in The Word of God.

They exhibited right behavior by their beliefs in Jesus Christ. Their beliefs caused them to have a Christ centered marriage which enabled them to have the right behavior according to The Word of God.

Couples can only stay in love forever by establishing marriage principles associated with Agape Love.
